Jun Seba, also known as Nujabes, was a Japanese D.J., record producer, audio engineer, and so much more, whose talents set him apart in his niche. He was an Aquarius born on February 7, 1974, in the Nishi-Azabu district of Minato in central Tokyo, Japan. Seba was always interested in music. He owned two Shibuya record stores called T Records and Guinness Records.
In 1998, Seba founded his independent record label, Hydeout Productions. In 2003, he released his debut solo album, “Metaphorical Music.” The same year, he released his debut compilation album, “Hydeout Productions 1st Collection.” In 2005, Seba released his sophomore solo album, “Modal Soul.” A lot of Seba’s works were released posthumously. For instance, his third solo album, “Spiritual State,” dropped in 2011. The D.J. and record producer collaborated with Shing02 on the critically acclaimed “Luv(sic) hexalogy,” also released posthumously in 2015. Since his death, Seba has achieved posthumous acclaim and has even been called the godfather of lo-fi hip-hop. He is credited for spearheading the genre’s mainstream popularity in the 2010s.
Seba was very talented in his niche. Sadly, his life was cut short when he was involved in a traffic collision on February 26, 2010. After failed revival efforts, Seba was pronounced dead at a Shibuya Ward hospital and laid to rest at the Japanese section of Tama Cemetery. He was never married, nor did he have children. Seba is missed every day and today, we remember him.
