Steve Perry

Background

Steve Perry’s beautiful tenor voice has earned him millions of fans. He struggled at the onset and almost quit music, but once he got his chance, he took it and became a household name in the industry. Perry was born on January 22, 1949, in Hanford, Kings County, California, and his zodiac sign is Aquarius. His parents, Mary Quaresma and Raymond Perry, are Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands. His father was a vocalist and radio station owner. His parents separated when he was eight, so he moved to Lemoore, California, with his mother.

Sam Cooke’s song ‘Cupid’ inspired him to become a singer. Perry moved to Sacramento and formed a band named Ice with Scott Mathews. However, the band wasn’t successful and never released any songs. In 1975, he moved to Thousand Oaks, California, where he formed another band called Pisces with Tim Bogert; this was also unsuccessful. He moved to Banta, California, where he formed another band called Alien Project. The band bassist died in an unfortunate accident, and Perry almost quit music.

He got his chance when he was asked to cover for the uncommitted Journey lead singer, Robert Fleischman. One day, when Fleischman was away, Perry performed with the band, and that was it. He later replaced Fleischman. His voice allowed him to change the band’s style, but some members met him with resistance. However, they saw reason with time, and he won everyone over to his new style. Journey became more successful with Perry providing lead vocals for seven of the band’s albums before releasing his first solo album “Street Talk” in 1984. “Street Talk” sold over two million copies. He left Journey in 1987 to pursue his solo career.
