History of Dribble to Work Day
Dribble to Work Day started as an anticipated event promoted by the NCAA Women’s Basketball League. The day gets the fans excited for “Selection Monday,” where judges reveal the players for the top four women’s college basketball teams. These players go on to participate in the NCAA Women’s Final Four basketball tournament.
Dribble to Work Day was first organized by the Tampa Bay Local Organizing Committee and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission in 2015. Since then, basketball fans have warmed up to the celebrations. The most common way to celebrate Dribble to Work Day is by literally dribbling your way to work — especially if you live close by. In the first year of Dribble to Work Day, the hashtag #WFFDribble was used. The winner would be the one with the most creative video and they would take their first shot at the NCAA Women’s Final Four court at Amalie Arena and the games would be declared open. The Business of Sports declared this holiday a success since the days got active coverage by three local television stations. Nearly 700 social media posts used #WFFDribble leading to nearly five million social media impressions!
The NCAA was founded in 1906 to regulate the rules of college sports and promote young athletes. At the start of the twentieth century, mass formations and gang tackling made football a brutal sport. During the 1904 season, 18 deaths and 159 serious injuries occurred on the field. Some institutions halted football on their campuses and the public demanded the sport be reformed or abolished. In October 1905, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt urged universities to clean up the game. As football deaths and injuries continued during the 1905 season, New York University Chancellor Henry M. MacCracken got 13 schools to reform football playing rules. Soon after, 62 colleges and universities became members of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the U.S., the precursor to the NCAA.
