Laughter is a fit-like feeling and activity that can usually be evoked by experiencing a humorous cognitive stimulus but also other such sensitive responses as tickling. As such, an individual can experience laughter without the necessity of a humorous stimulus as well as an individual can experience humor without laughing. Humor is ubiquitous and universal, further implicating a genetic substrate. As far as human knowledge goes, no culture is a stranger to humor. The average reasoning person can reliably comprehend obvious attempts at humor.
Humor has been part of modern human behavior for thousands of years. One of the earliest historical figures to be firmly associated with humor and laughter was the Greek philosopher Democritus, who is widely regarded as the “laughing philosopher”.
Humor is the active “ingredient” in comedy, and comedy these days is one of the biggest outlets through which humor is released. Comedy, therefore, is one of the most popular art forms of humor. Comedy dates back as far as the Fifth Century when Greek playwright Aristophanes, wrote 40 comedy plays (of which 11 survived). Comedy has since evolved through different platforms and there is a wide variety of expressive methods for the use of comedy. Some of the most notable comedians of recent history, who have successfully pushed the boundaries of humor as an art form, include, in no particular order; Charlie Chaplin, Moms Mabley, Woody Allen, Redd Foxx, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor, among others.
