Humorists are Artists Month – March 2025

Humorists Are Artists Month, celebrated in March each year, is an unofficial holiday recognizing all forms of humor, as a form of art. Humor has evolved to such a point where there are different forms and different ways by which it can be executed. The most popular form of humor is probably Stand-Up comedy and cinematic humor, the latter including comedy movies as well as T.V. series. In the internet age, humor has developed to a point where one may not necessarily need to turn on the T.V. or read the papers to find something funny. “Memes” are now a globally accepted part of popular culture and the internet is full of a seemingly endless variety of these memes. This holiday seeks to celebrate all humor as art.

History of Humorists are Artists Month

Humor, by definition, refers to the cognitive process that usually potentially elicits laughter from individuals. Laughter is a fit-like feeling and activity that can usually be evoked by experiencing a humorous cognitive stimulus but also other such sensitive responses as tickling. As such, an individual can experience laughter without the necessity of a humorous stimulus as well as an individual can experience humor without laughing. Humor is ubiquitous and universal, further implicating a genetic substrate. As far as human knowledge goes, no culture is a stranger to humor. The average reasoning person can reliably comprehend obvious attempts at humor.

Humor has been part of modern human behavior for thousands of years. One of the earliest historical figures to be firmly associated with humor and laughter was the Greek philosopher Democritus, who is widely regarded as the “laughing philosopher”.

Humor is the active “ingredient” in comedy, and comedy these days is one of the biggest outlets through which humor is released. Comedy, therefore, is one of the most popular art forms of humor. Comedy dates back as far as the Fifth Century when Greek playwright Aristophanes, wrote 40 comedy plays (of which 11 survived). Comedy has since evolved through different platforms and there is a wide variety of expressive methods for the use of comedy. Some of the most notable comedians of recent history, who have successfully pushed the boundaries of humor as an art form, include, in no particular order; Charlie Chaplin, Moms Mabley, Woody Allen, Redd Foxx, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor, among others.
