National Welsh Corgi Day – March 1, 2025

National Welsh Corgi Day is celebrated on March 1 every year. This is a pet holiday, so dog lovers should not miss it. The Welsh Corgi originated in Wales and is a small type of herding dog. The name ‘corgi’ comes from the Welsh words ‘cor’ and ‘ci,’ meaning ‘dwarf’ and ‘dog,’ respectively. Two separate breeds of corgi are recognized: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They have physical differences. According to the breed standards, overall the Cardigan is heavier and larger, and their tails are of different shapes.

History of National Welsh Corgi Day

National Welsh Corgi Day was celebrated for the first time by the Omaha Corgi Crew. The Omaha Corgi Crew was created in December 2011 by a group of friends who all shared a love of vertically-challenged herding dogs with big hearts. The Omaha Corgi Crew is based in Omaha, Nebraska and the surrounding area, as the name suggests.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi history seems to be untraceable. Corgis’ origins are mentioned in tales and folklore and even contain ties to the wee folk of the British Isles. According to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, Pembroke’s corgis are believed to have their ancestry date back to at least the 10th century. However, it is unknown whether they are descended from the Swedish Vallhunds that were possibly brought by the Vikings, or from the ancestors of the present-day Schipperkes and Pomeranians brought to Wales by Flemish weavers.

This breed of dog was known as ‘heelers’ because of their short stature and quick agility. They were used to maneuver large groups of bigger animals to make them move faster. These dogs are also known as the ‘dwarf’ dog or the ‘cur’ dog. The latter name comes from the Nordic word ‘kurra’ meaning ‘to growl.’ There are also some interesting stories about corgis. One ancient story suggests that corgis came to humans when two children stumbled upon a fairy funeral in the woods. The fairies gave two corgi puppies to the children. The rougher fur at the base of the corgi’s haunches is said to be the saddle line from when the fairies used them as war horses.
