NBA All Star Game – February 18, 2025

The NBA All-Star Game is an exhibition basketball event whose dates are organized by the sponsors a year in advance. This year it will be held on February 18 hosted by the National Basketball Association (N.B.A.) Do you know that it has been 70 years since The All-Star Game was played for the first time in Boston Garden? The NBA All-Star Game is the main event of the N.B.A. All-Star Weekend, and it consists of 12 of the league’s star players of all NBA Teams. The team is decided by the voting of the media, players, and fans. The new system allows the one with maximum votes to be the captain and choose his teammates from the All-Star reserve.

History of NBA All Star Game

The story goes back to the early 1950s when Maurice Podollof and Haskell Cohen who were the president and publicity director of N.B.A. respectively organized a meeting with Walter A. Brown who was the owner of the Boston Celtics. They proposed an exhibition game that would have the top players in the league. The first NBA All-Star Game was held on March 2, 1951, in Boston Garden.

The selection is mainly done by the players, fans, and also media voting. The fan vote is 50% and the other voters are 25% each. The main teams are the Eastern All-Stars, the Western All-Stars, and the teams led by players like Team LeBron and Team. The game is played with regular rules of the N.B.A.

The NBA All-Star Game was created as an entertainment exhibition. It was started in the 1950s during the point-shaving scandal. The creators came up with this idea to bring back the popularity of the game. The game is usually not played with a competitive mindset and more focus is given to entertainment. In 2020, Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash and 24 points were added to his team in his honor. The halftime of the game is also longer than a regular N.B.A. game. Halftime consists of performances by celebrities and musicians.
