History of Valentismas
Erin Herrmann founded Valentismas in 2019 in memory of her father, Duane Herrmann. Erin recalls how her father’s health deteriorated and they had to keep postponing Christmas celebrations. After his death in January 2019, his family debated whether they should even be celebrating Christmas. They had already bought gifts for each other and were actually looking forward to spending time with each other. This is how the first Valentismas came to be.
It became a Hermann family tradition, and they started to celebrate Valentismas instead of Christmas. They realized that, like them, many families go through losses during the year, which can be especially difficult during the festive season. They decided it was time to share the holiday with the world and help others going through a tough time, just like they had only a few years ago. Erin admits how preparing for Valentismas has brought so much joy, even during the most difficult time in her family’s life.
Being the day of love, it is likely why Valentine’s Day and Valentismas are celebrated so close together. Over the years, the legend of St. Valentine has assumed many shades and tones. However, that has not deterred lovers from celebrating the day. The most popular story is that St. Valentine was secretly conducting weddings for Roman soldiers before they were sent off to war. Another popular but unproven theory is that St. Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s daughter while in prison. Before he was to be executed, he wrote a love letter to her, signing it “Your Valentine.”
