National Parent Leadership Month is celebrated each year during the month of February. The month-long celebration aims to empower parents. Empowered parents raise empowered children which in turn helps build a strong community. National Parent Leadership Month brings empowerment tools to parents that encourage personal growth while at the same time taking care of the needs of those around them. With proper support and resources, parents and elderly members can become valuable contributors to society and uphold the best of personal, public, and national interests. National Parent Leadership Month envisions a society where parents, youth, and children can support each other and live in harmony.
History of National Parent Leadership Month
The National Parent Leadership Month celebrations were started by Shared Leadership, Parents Anonymous Inc. in 1969. The celebration is a brainchild of a mother, Jolly K., and Leonard Lieber. Jolly aimed to create a safe and caring home for her family and Lieber was a clinical social worker. The idea came about after Jolly was reunited with her daughter after a long stint in a foster home. She was surprised that there were no resources to address the emotional difficulties faced by her family. She sought help and support as a mother for her own family and encouraged her community to form the Parents Anonymous Group.
Jolly’s commitment and passion helped make a difference and parents finally found a way to strengthen their families without feeling any inhibitions. She was determined to put an end to child maltreatment and inspire and encourage parents, youth, and children to seek help when they need it. The organization also did a wonderful job of helping the historically marginalized communities of Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
More than five decades since its inception, National Parent Leadership Month continues to be celebrated with great fervor. Today the celebrations have gained enough popularity to impact policy and law-making decisions. With the help of agencies, volunteers, staff, and diverse federal, state, local and private donators, National Parent Leadership Month achieves its mission and goals of strengthening families each year.
