International Boost Self Esteem Month – February 2025

The International Boost Self-Esteem Month is annually observed in February. It is a period set aside in the year to help us believe in and appreciate ourselves more, despite whatever we may be facing. With high self-esteem, one can prevent many problems, like mental health disorders, and enjoy good overall health and a state of well-being. One is also able to be of valuable help and support to others. Our mental health is as important as our physical health, so we should use this month of observation to take care and learn to love ourselves.

History of International Boost Self Esteem Month

Self-esteem is generally defined as “an individual’s subjective evaluation of their worth.” It is a psychological construct that predicts certain outcomes, such as happiness, satisfaction, and achievement in spheres of life, as well as a propensity for crime. The concept of self-esteem dates back to the 18th century and was first expressed in the writings of the Scottish enlightenment thinker David Hume. Hume stated that: “It is important to value and think well of oneself because it serves a motivational function that enables people to explore their full potential.”

Self-esteem is entirely subjective, and that makes it hard to analyze. There are questions if accomplishments result from high-esteem, and failure from low self-esteem, or if alternatively, accomplishments cause one’s self-esteem to rise, and failure causes it to fall. Over successive years, its societal relevance received attention and it gained endorsement from some government and non-government groups starting around the 1970s — such that one can speak of a self-esteem movement.

Boosting one’s self-esteem isn’t an easy task, as it is an enormously complicated topic with science to how it comes about. However, one thing remains sure, that despite how poor and low it may be due to past experiences, it can be improved over time. Help is available for those who want to boost their self-esteem through trained professionals including therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists, who help them work through their thoughts and belief systems.
