History of National Religious Freedom Day

Though America is a nation that promotes religious freedom, there was a time when people weren’t so tolerant. It took the media and government years to work on the cause of religious independence. To ensure the coming generations do not stray down the path of intolerance, National Religious Freedom Day is observed every year. The day was officially proclaimed on January 16, 1993, in an annual statement by the U.S president. The cause was further promoted with the historic signing of the International Religious Freedom Act in 1998. And yes, we have the U.S. Congress and U.S. Presidential Administrations to thank for constant support in the cause.

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom is also one of the core foundations preserving an individual’s right to choose whichever faith one prefers, without any fear. The concept of religious freedom is essential for Americans because the idea is rooted in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The article states — “everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance.” Religious freedom is also a subject that organizations such as the United Nations deeply care about.

Moreover, societies that protect religious freedom are more likely to experience a surge in economic and social development. A nation that promotes inclusivity is a happy one!
