Stanley Martin Lieber, popularly known as Stan Lee, was born in New York, U.S., on December 28, 1922. Lee was the son of Celia and Jack Lieber, immigrants from Romania. He had a younger brother called Larry and he was born into a humble family that struggled financially during the Great Depression. Lee fell in love with stories and heroes when he was a child and used to read a lot of books and watch a lot of movies. When he was a teen, his family moved to The Bronk, where he attended DeWitt Clinton High School.
Lee had quite a few part-time jobs in his teen years. He used to sell subscriptions for a newspaper, write obituaries, was an office boy, and delivered sandwiches at the Rockefeller Center. Lee graduated from high school early at the age of 16. In 1939, he was hired as an office assistant at Timely Comic, a publishing house that would eventually evolve into Marvel Comics in the 1960s. Lee made his way up in the company and soon became interim editor. In the late 1950s, D.C. Comics was becoming a huge success with its Justice League of America team of superheroes. In response, Lee’s publisher, Goodman, ordered Lee to come up with a new superhero team. Then, Lee and his co-worker, Jack Kirby, created the Fantastic Four.
Lee has an outstanding career; he created superheroes that remain a hit in comic books and on the big screen until this day. Lee was the mind behind Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Thor, the Black Widow, and many more.
