Background
Luther Roderick Campbell, A.K.A. Uncle Luke, is an American rapper, actor, record producer, and executive whose talents have earned him success and fame in the music industry. He’s a Capricorn, born on December 22, 1960, in Miami, Florida. He is of Jamaican and Bahamian descent as his mother was Bahamian and his father was Jamaican. Campbell was the youngest of five sons. In 1979, he graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School.
Before his music career took off, Campbell did several odd jobs. In 1984, as his career as a promoter began to grow, he took notice of the 2 Live Crew rap group because of their ‘Revelation’ single and began managing them. In 1986, Campbell started his record label, Luke Skyywalker Records, and by April, he officially joined the 2 Live Crew group, offering them a record deal. That year, the group released their debut studio album, “The 2 Live Crew is What We Are,” which became gold-certified, making the group superstars in South Florida. Their second album, “Move Somethin’,” dropped in 1988 and peaked at number 68 on the Billboard 200 chart. 2 Live Crew’s third studio album, “As Nasty As They Wanna Be” (1989), became R.I.A.A. double-platinum certified. This album was deemed legally obscene by South Florida’s District Court, but the ruling was overturned. In 1990, Campbell released “Banned in the U.S.A.” with 2 Live Crew, and in 1992, his debut solo album, “I Got Shit on My Mind,” dropped. The rapper released six more solo albums, and in 2008, he starred in his V.H.1. series “Luke’s Parental Advisory.”
As a very successful musical maestro, Campbell’s personal life is public. He married Kristin Thompson in 2008, but she filed for divorce in 2020. At the time, Campbell shared he was very surprised by the decision, but the couple hasn’t told the public they’ve finalized their divorce yet. Campbell has five children.
