Katie Holmes was born on December 18, 1978, to Kathleen and Martin Joseph Holmes, Sr. She is the youngest of five children. Raised a Catholic, she was a member of Toledo’s Christ the King Church. She attended the all-girls Notre Dame Academy and Columbia University. She had aspired to be an actress since childhood. After entering the International Modeling and Talent Association Competition in New York City in 1996, she moved to Los Angeles and began auditioning for roles as an actress.

In 1998, she auditioned for the television show “Dawson’s Creek” and got the part of a tomboyish character. In 1998, she acted in the film “Disturbing Behavior,” portraying a cynical grocery clerk in “Go,” and an A student in “Teaching Mrs. Tingle.” She played a different type of temptress in “The Gift,” in which she played a college student madly in love with a college professor. She made her film debut in 2002 in the film “Abandon.” She then went on to play a mistress of a public relations agency in “Phone Booth” and Robert Downey, Jr.’s nurse in “The Singing Detective.” She starred in the big-budget picture “Batman Begins” in 2005. In 2009, she starred as Jackie Kennedy in the T.V. miniseries “The Kennedys,” which received positive reviews. She also became famous for her role in “How I Met Your Mother.”

Holmes had a romantic relationship with Joshua Jackson, her “Dawson’s Creek” co-star. She later became engaged to actor Chris Klein in 2003 but they separated in 2005. Shortly after, she began dating actor Tom Cruise. The couple got engaged in June 2005 and were married in 2006. They have a daughter named Suri who was born in 2006. The couple divorced in 2012. She has found love again and is currently dating Bobby Wooten, a musician.
