Manish Malhotra was born in Westminster, London, U.K., on December 5, 1965. Suraj Prakash Malhotra is his father, and Dinesh Malhotra and Rakesh Malhotra are his two brothers. His early years were spent in the Mumbai suburbs. He is a Sagittarius and belongs to a Hindu caste.

Malhotra did not receive a formal education in fashion design. Still, his love of painting and sketching, and his enthusiasm for movies and fashion led him in that direction. He made his costume styling debut in the Hindi film industry in 1990 with the film “Swarg.” He created Sridevi’s character’s entire appearance for Mahesh Bhatt’s “Gumrah” in 1993. His clothing designs for “Rangeela,” the film’s star heroine, marked the beginning of his successful career (1995). He transformed Urmila Matondkar from a simple and sober heroine in the movie into an alluring and attractive woman. Malhotra received an offer to style and design Yash Raj Chopra’s “Dil Toh Pagal Hai” in 1997. He received seven individual category honors for the costumes and styling of Karan Johar’s “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” which in 1998 caused an incredible frenzy. In 1999, Karan Johar made him an offer to style Kareena Kapoor’s appearance in the multi-star family drama “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.” He gained fame in 2004 for dressing Sushmita Sen in flowy chiffon sarees in the movie “Main Hoon Na” with vibrant colors and designs. He received the Filmfare Award for his excellent 30 years of contributions to the Bollywood style.
