Vin Scully

Background

Vincent Edward Scully, popularly known as Vin Scully, was born in the Bronx, New York, U.S. He was raised in Manhattan’s Washington Heights. His mother’s name is Bridget Scully, and she was a stay-at-home mother. His father’s name was Vincent Aloysius, and he worked as a silk salesman. Unfortunately, when Scully was four years of age, his father passed away from pneumonia. His mom later got married to Allan Reeve, who was a merchant sailor and whom Scully viewed as his dad.

Growing up, he attended Bronx’s Fordham Preparatory School and pursued his early education. When he was eight years old, Scully developed a knack for baseball. As he was a member of various social groups and lived in proximity to the Polo Grounds, he began attending the games free of cost. Thereafter, he started to make a living by working several odd jobs. Then he joined the U.S. Navy and was deployed for a period of two years. He returned to Fordham University and started his career as a student journalist and broadcaster majoring in English. During this time, he helped set up the F.M. radio station W.F.U.V.

Scully began his career as a fill-in in a C.B.S. Radio-affiliated station named W.T.O.P. It was located in Washington, D.C. He was then hired for college football coverage by the sports director of C.B.S. Radio Network, Red Barber. Over the course of time, Barber became a sort of a mentor to Scully and taught him the intricacies of being a good sports announcer.
