Even though many people know William Edward Fichtner as the government agent Alexander Mahone on the T.V. series “Prison Break,” Fichtner began his acting career in the late 1980s. His first role was as Josh Snyder in the 1987 soap opera “As the World Turns.” He went on to appear in numerous films such as “Armageddon,” “Crash,’ “Go,” “Equilibrium,” “Contact,” “Drive Angry,” “The Dark Knight,” and many others. His role in “Crash” won him a Best Acting Ensemble Award from Broadcast Film Critics Choice and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture Award. From 2013 to 2021, he appeared in the C.B.S. sitcom “Mom.”
Fichtner has also been involved in video game productions, voicing Ken Rosenberg in the video games “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” as well as Master Sergeant Sandman in the 2011 video game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.” Between 2005 and 2006, Fichtner also starred in the sci-fi T.V. series “Invasion.” After the cancellation of this series, he played ruthless F.B.I. Agent Alexander Mahone in three seasons of “Prison Break” from 2006 to 2009. He later played Eric Sacks in the 2014 American superhero film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
Fichtner has received several honors in his career. He was one of 115 people invited to join the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences in 2007. On May 18, 2008, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Farmingdale State College, acknowledging the Farmingdale Admissions Counselor, Don Harvey for inspiring him to study acting. Fichtner also co-presented the Vezina Trophy at the 2009 National Hockey League awards show.
