Background

Ever since he was a little kid, Christopher Vélez Muñoz has been interested in music. He planned to study music after school but was forced to let go of the idea due to a scarcity of funds. Muñoz moved to the U.S. from Ecuador when he turned 18, in search of a better future for himself and his family. He took various odd jobs, even shining shoes, to pay his way and contribute to his family’s expenses.

He kept his love for music alive via YouTube, creating a self-titled channel and posting various covers and original music. His channel soon began attracting attention, and his viewer base gradually increased. Then came the opportunity to audition for the Ricky Martin and Simon Cowell-led singing reality series, “La Banda.” The public loved Muñoz’s voice, and he was instantly selected to join the competition. This is also where Muñoz met future CNCO bandmates and fellow “La Banda” contestants Erick Brian Colón, Zabdiel De Jesús, Richard Camacho, and Joel Pimentel. All five were popular with the audiences, but Muñoz was the fan favorite who went on to win the competition. He went from this win onto another almost immediately — CNCO was formed the day of the show’s finale, with a name inspired by the Spanish ‘cinco,’ meaning five. They won a five-year contract with Sony Music Latin, with music producer Wisin producing their first album, and were represented by Ricky Martin.

This strong base and their natural talent helped Muñoz and CNCO rise in popularity almost instantly, and by 2016, they had released a worldwide hit, ‘Reggaetón Lento (Bailemos),’ which was a chart-topper everywhere. The band went on to release other successful albums like “CNCO” (2018), “Deja Vu” (2021), “Que Quiénes Somos” (2019), and others. They’ve also been nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards in 2017, and other awards since then.

Apart from his CNCO responsibilities, Muñoz also spends time working on his solo music and songwriting, which he releases on Spotify, Apple Music, and so on. His popular tracks, including ‘Viveme,’ ‘Say With Me,’ and ‘Contigo,’ have been streamed many times.
