Background

“The Randoms King” Grant Thompson was born in Canada on November 21, 1980. He was 38 at the time of his death in July 2019. There are no specifics about his father or mother. Grant, on the other hand, has one brother, Mark Thompson. He received his high school diploma and then enrolled in a pilot training program at the flying institute.

Grant Thompson, a 29-year-old airline pilot in Farmington, Utah, became fascinated with how things worked when he was 29. During his spare time, Thompson began tinkering with things and working on random household projects. Thompson eventually realized that his friends were becoming interested in his projects and came up with the idea of filming some of them and uploading them to YouTube.

Thompson formed a YouTube channel with the title “01032010814” in January 2010. The second clip he posted to the channel in 2010 marked the beginning of his D.I.Y. and life hack videos. Thompson didn’t start actively pursuing the idea of creating a branded YouTube channel devoted to life hack videos until late 2011. Thompson’s friend had told him some years before that he was the “King of Random” with all the unusual things he was always involved with. Thompson assumed this would be a good name for his YouTube channel and began planning to rename it “The King of Random” in early 2012.

Thompson had little experience with video editing. However, he was strongly motivated to build a channel with high-quality content and spent a lot of time learning how to film and edit his own videos. Thompson realized that his channel had the potential to grow with consistent releases of high-quality content because of its early success. He rapidly turned his basement into a creative studio for the many projects he had planned over the years. Thompson continued to develop his videos for the first few years of the channel. But as the channel grew in popularity and success, Thompson started to hire extra assistance with the channel’s production.

Nate Bonham joined the channel as a co-host on September 9, 2017, and became the permanent host a few weeks later. Calli Gade joined the channel as a co-host on October 25, 2018. Thompson presumably stepped away from the channel to spend more time with his family, but he continued to own it and was engaged in its day-to-day operational processes until his death. Thompson’s wife Janae inherited ownership of the channel following his death in July 2019.

T.K.O.R. announced the Grant Thompson Outward Bound Scholarship on July 16, 2021.
