Mason Ramsey

Background

Mason Ramsey was born in Illinois on November 16, 2006, to John Ramsey, a hairstylist, and Karen Ramsey, a homemaker. He moved to Golconda, Illinois, with his paternal grandparents, Ernest M. Ramsey and Frances Ramsey, when he was three weeks old. Ramsey has a younger sister.

According to his grandfather, Ramsey began singing before he could talk. He spent hours in the basement with his grandfather listening to the country singer Hank Williams that became his favorite singer. The first song Ramsey attempted to sing was Williams’ famous song ‘Long Gone Lonesome Blues.’ He opened for Josh Turner at the Carson Center when he was four years old and for Gene Watson at five. Ramsey began playing the guitar when he was six and performed on a Christmas T.V. show with Kenny Rogers when he was seven.

Before the release of his famous video, Ramsey was a rising young singer with an impressive resume. He won the 27th Annual Kentucky Opry Talent Search in January 2015 after performing Williams’ ‘Your Cheatin’ Heart.’ He then rose to internet fame after a video of him singing was posted online in January 2017. In that video, he was sitting in a Walmart shopping cart and singing ‘Hey Good Lookin’ by Hank Williams. Beaver 100.3 F.M. in Clarksville discovered Ramsey and asked him to sing the song for them. He did, and he also sang it in their studio, where he played his guitar. On March 24, 2018, Ramsey was recorded singing ‘Lovesick Blues’ in front of mattresses at a Walmart in Harrisburg, Illinois. The video was later uploaded to ‘ViralHog’s’ YouTube channel and eventually made its way to Twitter, receiving millions of views in a matter of days. Twitter users adored the 11-year-old music prodigy, who looked dapper in a bow tie and cowboy boots.
