Lamont Jody Hawkins, known professionally as U-God, is an American rapper and member of the famous hip-hop collective “Wu-Tang Clan.” He was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, on November 10, 1970, and later moved to Staten Island in his youth. Growing up, he was a beatboxer for rapper Cappadonna and was also good friends with Method Man, Inspectah Deck, and Raekwon, who would all later be members of Wu-Tang Clan.

Before his now-famous name, he had the alias “Golden Arms,” based on the Kung-Fu movie “Kid with the Golden Arm.” Hawkins was convicted of firearm and drug possession charges in 1992 and was paroled in 1993. He was unable to attend Wu-Tang Clan’s debut album recording sessions. However, He was heavily featured on their second album, “Wu-Tang Forever,” released in 1997. From 1999 to 2018, He released five solo albums, namely “Golden Arms Redemption,” “Mr. Xcitement,” “Dopium,” “The Keynote Speaker,” and “Venom.” He is very popular for his deep voice and rhythmic flow that can alternate between gruff and silky.

He has a son, Dontae Hawkins, who is also a rap artist. In 2020, he started a podcast called “U-God Raw,” where he speaks about music, art, and culture in an unfiltered and sometimes N.S.F.W.” way. Although he belongs to the older generation of rap artists, Hawkins still holds his own and has an unrelenting fan base on many social platforms.
