Yoo Jeong-yeon, known professionally as Jeongyeon, was born in Suwon, Gyeonggi, South Korea, on November 1, 1996. Her father worked as a chef for the former president of South Korea, Kim Dae-jung. She has two older sisters. She became interested in singing and dancing from a young age and honed her skills throughout her childhood. She failed her audition for the Korean record label, J.Y.P. Entertainment, but continued auditioning for the agency. She later started going by the name Jeongyeon. After training continuously, she finally passed an open audition in 2010.
In 2015, Jeongyeon joined the T.V. show “Sixteen,” a reality show in which the contestants are tested for their singing, dancing, personality, and charisma. The winners are chosen to be part of girl groups. The show ended with Jeongyeon being selected with eight other girls to be members of Twice. In 2016, Jeongyeon won the S.B.S.
