Lucia Roberta Tough Bronze, born in Tweed, England, on October 28, 1991, and better known as Lucy Bronze, is an English right-back, due to join Barcelona when the football season resumes. In 2020 she played for Manchester City of the W.S.L., in England, and for the England national team. Bronze represented England at all youth levels before appearing for the national team at Euro 2013. She played in the 2015 World Cup, helping England to a third-place finish, and the 2019 World Cup, in which England finished fourth. She has won the P.F.A. Player of the Year award twice: in 2014 and 2017. In 2018, she was named B.B.C. Footballer of the Year. In 2019, she became the first English footballer to win the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year Award, beating fellow teammates and finalists, Ada Hegerberg and Amandine Henry, to the award.
Bronze started playing for Sunderland at the U-12 level and later captained the U-16 team. In the 2007/08 season, she was named Coaches’ Player of the Year and helped Sunderland finish third in the F.A. Women’s Premier League, Northern Division. The following season, she won the Northern Division and was promoted to the National Division. She was named Player of the Match in the 2009 Women’s FA Cup Final against Arsenal. In the summer of 2009, Bronze went to the United States to study at the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, and play for the North Carolina Tar Heels University soccer team that competed in N.C.A.A. Division I. She was awarded a scholarship by coach Anson Dorrance, which made the Englishwoman become the first British player to win the N.C.A.A. Cup, in December 2009. After a year at the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, she returned to England in 2010 and continued to play for Sunderland.
In September 2010, it was announced that Bronze had signed a contract with Everton, with whom she made her Champions League debut. She made her debut for Everton against M.T.K. in Hungary. After that, however, she continued to play for Sunderland until the 2011 F.A. W.S.L. season.
