Frank Ocean

Background

Christopher Edwin Breaux, popularly known as Frank Ocean, was born on October 28, 1987, in Long Island, California. His parents are Calvin Edward Cooksey and Katonya Breaux. Ocean is of African-American descent. He has two siblings; a sister named Ashley and a half-brother named Ryan. When Ocean was young, his family relocated to New Orleans. Ocean attended John Ehret High School and graduated in 2005. He went to the University of New Orleans to study English. Due to Hurricane Katrina, Ocean’s family’s house was destroyed. He had to move and enroll at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Ocean dropped out of college in 2006 to pursue a music career. He moved to Los Angeles.

Ocean began his career in the music industry as a ghostwriter. He composed songs for well-known artists like Justin Bieber, John Legend, and Beyonce. In 2010, Ocean joined the rap group Odd Future. In 2011, Ocean released the mixtape “Nostalgia, Ultra.” The success of the mixtape helped him land a record deal with Def Jam Recordings. In 2012, Ocean released his debut album, “Channel Orange.” The album won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the Grammy Awards, and the single ‘Thinkin About You’ won Record of the Year. The multi-talented artist released his second album, “Blonde,” on his own in 2016.

Ocean made a huge impact on the music industry. His distinct music style — experimenting with layering R&B with jazz and funk sounds — made him one of the greatest artists of his generation. Due to some of Ocean’s song lyrics and previous interviews he has had, he is presumed to be bisexual, however, he keeps his love life private.
