Background

At the age of nine, Wayne Mark Rooney, better known as Wayne Rooney, entered the Everton Club Academy. He made his professional debut at age 16, scoring a sensational last-minute winner to put an end to Arsenal’s unbeaten 30-game streak. At that time, he was the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. As a member of the English national team from 2003 to 2004, he was also the team’s youngest player. He helped them advance to the quarterfinals of the 2004 European Championship. Also in 2004, he moved to soccer powerhouse Manchester United, with an astounding transfer fee for an 18-year-old.

Rooney led United to a Premier League Championship and a Carling Cup win from 2006 to 2007. From the 2007 to 2008 season, he contributed to the club’s Premier League and Champions League titles. Rooney scored the only goal in the team’s 1-0 win in the tournament final to secure their first FIFA Club World Cup Championship. The following season, they won their third consecutive league title. From 2010 to 2011 and 2012 to 2013, Rooney went on to be part of United’s league-title-winning squads. Rooney returned to Everton soccer Club in July 2017 at the age of 31 as a five-time Premier League winner. He finished as the club’s top goalscorer with 11 goals in all competitions in the 2017 to 2018 season. He signed with Major League Soccer side D.C. United in June 2018. Despite only playing the last half of the season, he finished as the club’s top goalscorer. In 2020, he moved on to become a player and coach for Derby County in the English soccer Championship League. A year later, he retired and became the manager of the team.

His personal life is almost as colorful as his professional life. In 2008, he married his long-time love, secondary schoolmate, and television presenter, Coleen McLoughlin. The pair’s relationship has been the subject of gossip in the country’s tabloid industry. They are parents to four boys: Kai Wayne, Klay Anthony, Kit Joseph, and Cas Mac.
