Amandla Stenberg was born on October 23, 1998, in Los Angeles, California to African-American spiritual counselor and writer Karen Brailsford and Danish-born Tom Stenberg. Her maternal grandmother was of Greenlandic Inuit descent. On her father’s side, Stenberg has two elder half-sisters. In the South African languages of IsiXhosa and Zulu, her first name means ‘power’ or ‘strong.’ Stenberg began posing for Disney catalogs at the age of four. She has been in ads for companies, including Boeing.

In her debut feature film, “Colombiana,” she played a younger version of Zoe Saldana’s character.
