Background
Deepak Chopra was born to Krishan Chopra and Pushpa Chopra on October 22, 1946, in New Delhi, India. Sanjiv Chopra, Chopra’s younger brother, is a medical professor at Harvard Medical School. Chopra went to St. Columba’s School in New Delhi for his primary education. He earned his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1969. He wanted to study endocrinology because he wanted to comprehend neuroendocrinology and discover a biological foundation for how thoughts and emotions influence physical health. He moved to the United States in 1970 to pursue residencies in internal medicine and endocrinology. In 1973 he became board certified in internal medicine, specializing in endocrinology. He taught at Tufts University, Boston University, and Harvard University’s medical schools before becoming the chief of staff at New England Memorial Hospital (N.E.M.H.) in 1980.
In 1981, he began practicing Transcendental Meditation and met its founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, in 1985, who requested him to initiate an Ayurvedic health center. Chopra left N.E.M.H. to become the founding president of the American Association of Ayurvedic Medicine, as well as the co-founder of Maharishi Ayurveda Products International. He coined the term “quantum healing,” which refers to a process by which a person’s health imbalance can be corrected using quantum mechanical means.
Chopra has attempted to incorporate Ayurveda and quantum mechanics to justify his teachings. Chopra’s book “Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine” was released in 1989, and was followed by “Perfect Health: The Complete Mind/Body Guide” in 1990. His book “Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old” was released in 1993, and it sold 137,000 copies in a single day, and 400,000 by the end of the week. The book also landed him an appearance on “Oprah’s Show.”
