Background

Emmy Rossum was born Emmanuelle Grey Rossum in New York City, New York, on September 12, 1986, to Cheryl Rossum, a single mother. When her mother was pregnant with her, her parents divorced. Her mother was a photographer for businesses. Rossum was raised as a Jew and began singing at a young age, and she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus by the age of seven. The exposure was quite beneficial, as she was allowed to play on stage within five years. She even sang with great opera singers. She performed in 20 different operas in six other languages. In “Carmen,” she also worked under Franco Zeffirelli’s direction. She had established an interest in acting by the age of 12. She enrolled in ‘The New Actors Workshop’ in New York City to seek a career in acting. She also completed her studies at Manhattan’s Spence School, which she ultimately dropped out of. She graduated from Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth with a high school diploma when she was 15. She went on to Columbia University after that.

In 1997, she made her acting debut as a guest star on “Law & Order,” with Alison Martin as her character in the program. Following that, she secured a recurring part as Abigail Williams in the long-running daytime soap opera “As the World Turns.” Meanwhile, she appeared in “Snoops” as Caroline Beels, a guest part. Her performance in the made-for-TV film “Genius” got her a nomination for the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a T.V. Movie the same year. She portrayed young Audrey Hepburn in the A.B.C. television movie “The Audrey Hepburn Story” in 2000. In the same year, she made her big-screen debut in the film “Songcatcher.” In the film, she portrayed Deladis Slocumb, an Appalachian orphan. She was then cast in the film “Nola” in 2003, in which she played the lead role. Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River,” where she played Katie Markum, gave her her big break in the movies. Her performance as Laura Chapman in Roland Emmerich’s eco-disaster thriller “The Day After Tomorrow” was arguably the most important role in her film career because the general audience greatly admired the picture and her acting abilities. She eventually earned the coveted role of Christine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” onscreen version.

After a four-year absence, she returned to the big screen with the film “A Futile and Stupid Gesture.” In the same year, she appeared in the short film “That’s Harassment,” where she played a journalist. Rossum starred as Kim Dash in Hans Petter Moland’s action-thriller “Cold Pursuit.” She has explored a musical career in addition to her acting career. In 2007, she finally released her album “Inside Out.” She wrote songs for the album in addition to singing. “Sentimental Journey,” her second album, was released in 2013.
