Big Daddy Kane began his career in 1986 as a member of the Queens-based hip-hop collective, Juice Crew. In 1987, Kane signed with the Cold Chillin’ Records label. In the same year, he debuted with the 12″ single “Raw,” which became an instant underground hit. Despite being asthmatic, Kane’s ability to syncopate over faster hip-hop beats carved him a niche in the industry. He is considered one of the pioneering masters of fast rhyming. Aside from his musical achievements, he also set several late 1980s and early 1990s fashion trends, such as high-top fade hairstyles, velour suits, and four-finger rings.
The early summer of 1988 saw Big Daddy Kane release his first album under Cold Chillin’ Records called “Long Live the Kane.” This album featured the hit “Ain’t No Half Steppin.” The following year, he released his second album titled “It’s a Big Daddy Thing.” It is B.D.K.’s biggest hit to date. The year 1991 was a big year for Kane as he bagged the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his performance on the track “Back on the Block,” which he did with Quincy Jones. Kane is regarded as one of the greatest rappers from the ‘golden age’ of hip hop. He worked with other greats such as MC Hammer, Tupac Shakur, Ice-T, and A Tribe Called Quest.
