Rolf Jacob Sartorius was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Due to his parents being unable to take care of him shortly after his birth, he was given up for adoption and moved to Virginia. He was raised in Reston, Virginia by his adoptive parents and at age seven, he began performing in musicals, where he discovered his love for performing.

Before the closure of Vine, an American short-form video hosting service in 2017, Sartorius lip-syncing videos posted on the platform acquired more than eight million followers as of August 2016. As a victim of bullying, he believed social media offered him an escape. He used to say that before Musical.ly, he wasn’t the most outgoing. He felt like no one was watching besides the camera.

On May 3, 2016, Jacob Sartorius released his debut single ‘Sweatshirt’ and it peaked at No. 90 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He also undertook a solo mini-tour called the ‘All My Friends Tour,’ where he performed in six cities in the same year. He later released two more singles, ‘Hit or Miss’ and ‘All My Friends.’ His single ‘Hit or Miss,’ which was the first single off his debut E.P., “The Last Text EP ” ranked at No. 72 in the United States. He also attended the Los Angeles March in March 2018, for the ‘Our Lives’ protest and gave a speech at the event.
