Background
Yvie Oddly is a Denver native who grew up playing with her mother’s makeup kit and wearing her sister’s dresses. She always had a natural curiosity for gender roles and transformation. Her first exposure to drag came when she attended East High School. One of her classmates dressed up as a sex worker for Halloween, and the concept intrigued her. The following year she came to Halloween in a similar outfit, reveling in the shock and admiration she received from her peers. Oddly briefly did gymnastics before transitioning to musical theatre, attending the Denver School of the Arts at the Auraria Campus.
Her career as a drag queen began in 2012 when she went to a campus workshop hosted by Venus D’Lite from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” It was here she adopted the name Yvie Oddly as a play on the words “even odder than everyone else.” Her early performances took place at Denver’s gay bar called Tracks and it was here that she built a reputation for outlandish, unorthodox looks on stage. By 2018, Oddly was an accomplished drag queen in Denver and wanted to turn it into a full-time job.
She auditioned for season 11 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in January 2019 and got accepted as a contestant, becoming the second queen on the show from Denver after Nina Flowers. Her eccentric style and candid personality made her a fan favorite, and her rivalry with contestant Silky Nutmeg Ganache kept the audience entertained throughout the series. On May 30, 2019, Oddly won the show and walked away with the $100,000 prize. She set a record of having the fewest challenge wins of any winner in the history of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” As of April 2022, Oddly is one of the eight contestants that will appear on the seventh season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars,” a spin-off series where all the contestants are winners of previous shows.
