Shawn Mendes was born on August 8, 1998, in Pickering, Ontario to Karen Mendes, a real estate agent, and Manuel Mendes, a businessman. Raised in a religious family, his mother’s from England, while his father is from Portugal. He has a younger sister named Aaliyah. In June 2016, he graduated from Pine Ridge Secondary School, where he played ice hockey, and soccer, and joined the high school glee club, where he practiced his stage presence. During that time, he also auditioned for ‘Disney Channel’ in Toronto.

Mendes gained a following in 2013 when he began posting song covers on ‘Vine’, the video-sharing application which caught the attention of manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R Ziggy Chareton in the following year, and led to him signing a deal with the record label.
