Park Soo-young

Background

Park Soo-young was born on Jeju Island on September 3, 1996, and raised in Dobong, Seoul. She is the eldest sister of three. Joy was inspired to become a singer after getting recognition for her cover version of Korean rock band Cherry Filter’s song ‘Flying Duck’ during a grade school festival when she was a child. Joy attended the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul in 2012 and was cast by S.M. Entertainment.

After two years of training, she was given the stage name ‘Joy’ by a vocal coach. On July 29, 2014, Joy was introduced as Red Velvet’s fourth member. She was the only member of the group who wasn’t introduced as a member of S.M. Rookies, S.M. Entertainment’s pre-debut training team. With the digital single ‘Happiness,’ Red Velvet made its debut in August 2014. Joy made her solo television debut in June 2015 with the fourth season of M.B.C.’s variety show “We Got Married,” in which she was paired with BtoB member Yook Sung-jae. Joy was honored for her participation at the 2015 M.B.C. Entertainment Awards, winning the New Star Award and Best Couple Award. In April 2016, Joy released a duet with Sung-jae called ‘Young Love,’ for which Joy received songwriting credit. Joy made her acting debut in the music drama “The Liar and His Lover,” a South Korean adaptation of Kotomi Aoki’s popular manga “Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru,” in 2017. Joy made her first permanent hosting appearance in 2018 as the co-host of J.T.B.C.’s “Sugar Man” season two alongside top T.V. personalities Yoo Jae-suk, You Hee-yeol, and Park Na-rae. Joy was announced to be one of the main hosts of the popular beauty show OnStyle’s “Get It Beauty” in January 2019, alongside former “Pajama Friends” co-host Jang Yoon-ju. She joined the athletic variety show “Handsome Tigers” in December 2019 as the manager of Seo Jang-basketball hoon’s team, which included Lee Sang-yoon and Cha Eun-woo.

Joy’s solo O.S.T. ‘Introduce Me a Good Person’ was released in March 2020 for the soundtrack of tvN’s drama “Hospital Playlist.” The song has topped multiple charts, including the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 Chart at number five, the Gaon Digital Chart at number six, and has surpassed 500 million Gaon Digital Index Points. Joy then took part in the multi-collaboration project “Evergreen Tree” in April 2020, alongside prominent Korean artists, to support medical professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. She made her official solo debut on May 12, 2021, with a special album featuring six remake songs from the 1990s to the 2000s. On May 31, Joy’s extended play “Hello” was released, with the title track reaching number one on multiple charts and the album charting at number one in 26 countries on the iTunes Top Album charts. Joy was nominated for Artist of the Year at the Gaon Music Awards on November 27, 2021. She later made her acting comeback on December 20, 2021, in the J.T.B.C. drama “The One and Only.” Joy was named a Calvin Klein muse in January 2022. She later became an exclusive model of Athé, a premium vegan beauty brand, in February of the same year. Joy was announced as the new endorser of Lacto-Joy health products in March 2022.
