Background
Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946, in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York City. He is the second of five children born to Frederick “Fred” Christ Trump and Mary Anne MacLeod. Both Trump’s mother and paternal grandparents were immigrants to the United States. Her mother was born in Scotland and at the age of eighteen, in 1930, she immigrated to New York, where she worked as a domestic servant. In 1936, she married Fred Trump, whose parents, Friedrich Trump and Elisabeth Christ, were immigrants from Germany.
After graduating from the Wharton University of Pennsylvania in 1968, Trump joined his father’s company, The Trump Organization. He carried out the renovation of the Commodore Hotel at the Grand Hyatt with the Pritzker family. Among the great projects carried out by him is the Trump Tower in New York. Shortly thereafter, he expanded his industrial interests into the airline industry (buying the Eastern Shuttle routes) and the casino business in Atlantic City, including the purchase of the Crosby family’s Taj Mahal casino, which eventually went bankrupt. This expansion, both personal and business, drove him into debt. Much of the news about him in the 1990s involved his financial problems, which resulted in his divorce from his first wife, Ivana Trump. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that there was a resurgence in his financial situation and his fame. In 2001, he completed Trump World Tower and began building Trump Palace, a modern building along the Hudson River. He currently owns several square feet of the best real estate areas in Manhattan and remains a leading figure in the real estate trade in the United States. He is a celebrity.
In June 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States in the 2016 Republican Party elections. Throughout his candidacy, Trump topped opinion polls among Republican candidates. With his populist and anti-immigration speeches, Trump has won support among his party’s ultra-conservative wing. His comments (especially on immigration) drew condemnation from other politicians and the media. In July 2016 he was confirmed by the party as the candidate in the election. On November 8, 2016, Trump won the presidency with 304 electoral college delegate votes to 227 received by Clinton. Trump became the 45th U.S. candidate to win the electoral college, despite receiving far fewer popular votes than his opponent. In the popular vote, he lost by 2.8 million votes to Hillary Clinton, which was the biggest defeat to date. Trump was the second presidential candidate in American history whose experience comes primarily from business management. When he took office, Trump became the first President of the United States with no prior government or military experience and the first without prior political experience since Dwight D. Eisenhower. After Trump’s victory, protests began to take place across the country, in part due to some controversial policies and inflammatory comments by Trump, as well as revelations made during the campaign. Trump claimed on Twitter that the protesters were incited by the media, but later claimed that he loved their passion for the country. In 2020, Trump expressed an intention to run for a second term, filing a lawsuit with the Federal Elections Commission within hours of assuming the presidency, causing his 2016 election committee to turn into a reelection one. Trump officially kicked off the campaign at a rally in Melbourne, less than a month after taking office. In January 2018, the re-election committee raised $22 million, raising a total fund of $67 million in December 2018. Trump became his party’s presumptive candidate in March 2020 after securing most of the delegates needed for the nomination. from him.
In mid-2020, the re-election campaign declined in polls, reflecting popular dissatisfaction with how to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and protests for racial justice — following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. On 2 October 2020, about a month before the voting date, he and his wife Melania were diagnosed with COVID-19. On November 7, 2020, Trump lost the election to Joe Biden.
