Remy Ma was born Reminisce Smith in the Bronx, New York City, U.S. She was raised in the city’s Castle Hill Projects. Unfortunately, as her family had a history of drug abuse, she was exposed to the ordeal at a very young age. Therefore, Ma was forced to take care of her younger sisters and brother. She found solace by writing poetry, which helped her retreat from the issues in home life.

Growing up, she built quite a reputation for herself in her neighborhood, ultimately drawing the attention of the rapper and songwriter Big Pun. The two met at a freestyle session and impressed by her skills, he took her under his wing. Thereafter, Ma worked alongside her newfound mentor on his album “Yeeeah Baby,” kick-starting her career. She was featured on two of the tracks on this album, namely ‘You Was Wrong’ and ‘Ms. Martin.’

After the sad demise of Big Pun, Ma was signed by the imprint label of Fat Joe called Universal and SRC. Then, she became a member of a hip-hop group called Terror Squad. However, she was arrested in July 2007 for allegedly shooting the rapper Makeda Barnes-Joseph, thus putting a hold on her career while she served her time. While she was behind the bars, Ma released the mixtapes “Blasremy,” “The BX Files,” and “Shesus Khryst. Her career grew exponentially after she was released from prison in 2014.
