Background

Melanie Martinez is an American singer and songwriter, who is also known for her acting, directing, photography, screenwriting, and visual arts. Martinez was born on April 28, 1995, in Astoria, Queens, and she was raised in Baldwin, New York. Her parents, Mery and Jose Martinez, are of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent. Martinez’s inspirations growing up included artists such as Britney Spears, The Beatles, Tupac Shakur, Christina Aguilera, and many more. She shot to fame in 2012 when she starred on the American television vocal talent show, “The Voice.”

In 2014, she released her first single ‘Dollhouse,’ which received critical acclaim. In 2015, she debuted her first studio album, “Cry Baby,” which was certified double-platinum, and she was the opening act for Lindsey Stirling on her ‘Music Box’ tour that same year. Martinez opened for Adam Lambert on his ‘The Original High’ tour in 2016. In 2017, she made her directorial debut when she produced a film telling the story of each song from her second album; which was titled “K-12.” A follow-up E.P. to “K-12” was released in 2020, titled “After School.”

Martinez has had a very exciting career making music and producing films, but she is also known for her collaboration with the makeup company Lime Crime, Inc., where she has her own line of exclusive lipsticks. In 2020, she received her first nomination for “Top Soundtrack’” at the Billboard Music Awards for her work on “K-12.” In 2023, she released her album, “Portals.”
