Background

Katorah Kasanova Marrero was born in Brooklyn, New York, U.S. Young M.A., her stage name is well-known. The artist is of mixed race, having a Jamaican mother and a Puerto Rican father. Unfortunately, her father was imprisoned when she was just a year old and only released when she was 11. Due to the absence of her dad, Marrero grew close to her mother and brother, Kenneth Ramos. When she was seven years old, her family relocated to Chesterfield, Virginia to escape the rising violence in East New York. Moreover, her mother thought that the city would provide better educational opportunities. She began writing rhymes in her schoolbooks, to which her mother responded positively and even purchased a karaoke machine for her. After that, the aspiring rapper set up a makeshift studio in her room.

In 2009, when she was just nine she started rapping. Marrero gravitated towards hip-hop and reggae music because her mother played it often at home. Sadly, she experienced tragedy once more during this time when her brother was murdered by gang members. She was devastated by her brother’s death because he was like a father figure to her. As a result, she struggled with depression and required treatment for numerous sessions. She also took a break from music during this devastating time.

Marrero eventually began collaborating with local musicians to compose music. She employed a variety of part-time jobs to help fund her passion projects. The rapper rose to prominence in 2014, and her debut song was released in 2016. Her music has continued to gain acclaim and followers throughout the years.
